Janese Lewis George, a Democratic Socialist and a member of the District of Columbia Council, is positioned to become Washington D.C.’s next mayor. Her policy platform includes initiatives such as ending police cooperation with ICE, opposing youth curfews, implementing free bus services, and promoting universal childcare.
Former President Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to her agenda, labeling her as a “communist” and expressing intentions to block policies that he believes could compromise public safety. Trump argued that his administration has made Washington a safer place and he pledged to oppose any plans that might weaken immigration enforcement or the city’s criminal justice system.
In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things.’”
Lewis George’s victory in the Democratic mayoral primary set the stage for potential confrontations with Trump. Having defeated Kenyan McDuffie and other candidates, she is expected to succeed Mayor Muriel Bowser, with Democrats holding strong majority in general elections in the city.
Her win highlights a likely clash with Trump, who emphasizes reducing crime and reshaping the nation’s capital as key to his second-term focus. The National Guard presence and Trump’s threats to revoke the District’s home rule if crime persists underscore potential tensions.
Lewis George has criticized the federal law enforcement presence and the deployment of the National Guard, describing them as “a direct attack” on city residents. During her campaign, she emphasized the threat posed by “federal troops” and “masked ICE agents” over juvenile crime. She advocated for expanded youth programs and community investments rather than relying on curfews and federal enforcement.
Trump has suggested considering putting Washington under more stringent federal control if Lewis George were elected mayor, stating, “We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses.”
