A West Virginia state delegate faces widespread calls for resignation following accusations of inappropriate conduct with a minor. David Elliott Pritt, a Republican, was arrested for alleged involvement in sexual acts with a 15-year-old girl at Oak Hill High School, where he taught English.
On Wednesday, he faced charges of enticement of a minor. His arrest followed a criminal complaint by the girl’s family accusing him of sexual abuse. Newsweek contacted Pritt’s public defender for comment.
Allegations Detail
Pritt allegedly began communicating with the student in 2024. They reportedly used platforms like Roblox and Snapchat to communicate. The complaint states that he professed feelings for the girl by the school year’s end.
During the summer of 2025, Pritt sent explicit videos and photos and requested similar content from the victim. Reports indicate he began a physical relationship with her last year. They allegedly met in his classroom for sexual acts.
The most recent encounter reportedly occurred between December and January. Communication continued until recently through Snapchat. In a June message, Pritt cautioned her against revealing their relationship, warning about legal and personal consequences.
Reaction and Calls for Resignation
Speaker Roger Hanshaw relieved Pritt of legislative duties and urged resignation, expressing disappointment at the allegations. Hanshaw emphasized the importance of trust in public officials, demanding accountability if the allegations are true.
Delegate Josh Holstein joined the call for resignation, stressing the need for leaders to meet the highest conduct standards. He stated that Pritt’s ability to serve effectively is compromised by these serious charges.
School and Legal Responses
Fayette County Schools acknowledged the arrest, committing to cooperation with law enforcement. The school emphasized that student and staff safety is paramount.
Superintendent Michele Blatt suspended Pritt’s teaching certificate, highlighting the public trust teachers hold. The charges against Pritt are considered highly concerning.
Pritt remains in custody at Carter County Detention Center, with a scheduled federal court appearance on Monday. Elected in 2022, Pritt is an Air Force veteran and has four children.
If Pritt does not resign, Delegate Evan Worrell suggests Governor Patrick Morrisey consider a special session to evaluate Pritt’s status. The House has a duty to ensure public officials meet expected standards, independent of ongoing legal processes.
