The White House, under President Donald Trump, recently took down a Tetris-inspired game from its online arcade following a copyright alert from The Tetris Company.
Last week, the White House introduced an online arcade featuring games based on classic styles, aligned with Trump’s political objectives. Among these, Supply Line involved sorting school lunches for healthiness. Another, Rio Run, allowed players to simulate border patrol activities.
A notable addition was Build the Wall, bearing a resemblance to the well-known block-stacking game. By Wednesday morning, this game was removed from the arcade section of the White House’s website.
The Tetris Company informed Newsweek
on Monday that they had no involvement in the creation of Build the Wall and did not authorize the use of Tetris-related intellectual property. A statement from the company emphasized that Tetris has, for over four decades, united people through its gameplay.
The statement explained,
The objective of the game has always been to stack with purpose to clear as many lines as possible. We are currently reviewing the matter.
The company also issued a warning on Instagram reiterating their position on the matter and highlighting the severity with which they regard copyright infringement in their products. This event is still unfolding, with further updates anticipated.
