Baseball Fans Pay Homage to Pope Leo XIV with Unique Giveaway
Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and dedicated White Sox fan, was once seen wearing a Chicago White Sox cap at the Vatican. Now, baseball fans will respond with a special tribute. On August 11, while attending the White Sox game against the Cincinnati Reds at Rate Field, each spectator will receive a White Sox version of the pope’s ceremonial hat, known as a ‘mitre’.
Event Expansion Due to Positive Response
Originally designed as a limited giveaway for 1,500 attendees, the initiative quickly gained momentum. Mike Downey, senior director of marketing and fan promotions for the White Sox, explained that ticket sales tripled within 24 hours of the announcement. This led to expanding the giveaway to accommodate all fans, resulting in over 40,000 pope hats distributed.
The Origin of the Promotion
The idea took shape following the announcement of the new pope, born Robert Francis Prevost. As the first U.S. pope and an acknowledged baseball fan, Downey saw a unique promotional opportunity. Although creative concepts like pope bobbleheads were discarded due to lack of official approval, the hat idea persisted. In consultation with Father Tom Hurley, a local priest, Downey ensured the plan was respectful and tasteful.
Designing and Producing the Hats
The mitre, with its unique design and lack of copyright, proved challenging to mass-produce. After consulting several vendors, Cotopaxi was chosen to custom-make the intricate hats. Despite the complex design, the company efficiently adjusted to the order increase from 1,500 to over 40,000 hats.
Opting for quality over cost, the White Sox avoided cheaper materials like collapsible cardboard, choosing a durable fabric that meets their high standards for promotional items.
Exciting Day for Fans and the Team
The promotion offers fans a chance to wear the unique hats at a sold-out ballpark. Players, staff, and even visiting team members will receive hats, enhancing the game’s cultural significance. Special in-game references to Pope Leo and the church will also feature, emphasizing a celebratory spirit over humor.
Shipping Concerns and Final Thoughts
With ample planning, the hats are scheduled to arrive a week before the event, ensuring timely delivery despite potential shipping delays. Downey expressed confidence, hopeful that Pope Leo XIV remains informed and supportive of the celebration.
