White Sox Lose Lead and Game to Guardians After Rain Delay

The Chicago White Sox experienced a setback against the Cleveland Guardians in a 4-3 loss in 10 innings at Progressive Field. The game saw over 33,000 fans in attendance. The highlight for the White Sox came when third baseman Miguel Vargas delivered a three-run home run after a challenging 10-pitch at-bat in the fifth inning.

A significant rain delay of nearly two hours followed Vargas’s home run. This interruption forced both teams to rely on their bullpens once play resumed. White Sox starter Anthony Kay, who had allowed just one run over four innings, did not return after the delay. Manager Will Venable voiced his concerns about missed opportunities to score more runs and credited the Guardians’ bullpen for their performance.

The Guardians capitalized on the post-delay situation. Kahlil Watson’s walk-off single in the 10th inning drove in Steven Kwan, sealing the White Sox’s second consecutive walk-off defeat. Earlier, Guardians center fielder Kwan tied the game in the seventh inning with an RBI single, taking advantage of fielding issues under challenging conditions.

Venable reflected on key defensive plays that made the difference, while Vargas emphasized the team’s overall strong performance despite the back-to-back losses. The White Sox now trail the Guardians by one game in the American League Central standings, following this defeat and Thursday’s walk-off loss.

Anthony Kay expressed frustration over the timing of the rain delay, indicating it impacted the game’s flow and potentially affected his opportunity to pitch deeper. The team’s focus shifts to bouncing back in the upcoming games of the series.
