The Chicago White Sox faced a challenging game against the Atlanta Braves, with designated hitter Andrew Benintendi breaking up a potential no-hitter in the seventh inning with a single to left field. Despite this effort, the Sox managed only one hit in the 2-0 loss at Rate Field, watched by 17,052 spectators.
White Sox manager Will Venable praised the Braves pitcher, Grant Holmes, who had a strong command of the zone and presented difficulty for the Sox hitters by avoiding pitches over the plate. Venable mentioned that the team did make some solid contact early in the game, but lacked consistent opportunities at the plate.
“Everyone that we saw obviously was really good, starting with Holmes,” Sox manager Will Venable said. “Thought he did a really nice job controlling the zone, pitched in parts of the zone that were just tough for us.”
Holmes, together with three relievers, achieved a one-hitter. Within his six-plus innings on the mound, Holmes struck out three batters and walked three. Sox catcher Drew Romo noted Holmes’ effective slider, which posed difficulties for the White Sox lineup.
The game was a rescheduled meeting originally set for June 11 but delayed due to stormy weather. Venable appreciated the fans’ support during this midweek makeup game.
Holmes exhibited confidence on the mound, retiring the first five White Sox batters and not allowing another runner past second base until the sixth inning.
Braves reliever Didier Fuentes entered during a moment of pressure, with runners on first and second and no outs in the seventh inning. Fuentes quickly quelled the Sox’s best offensive threat by striking out three consecutive batters, concluding the scoring opportunity.
Throughout the season, the Sox have experienced nine shutouts, including this game. However, they maintain their leadership in the American League Central standings, holding a 3½ game lead over the Minnesota Twins.
Despite the loss, White Sox pitcher Anthony Kay delivered an admirable performance, pitching over six innings with two runs allowed, five hits, six strikeouts, and one walk. Venable acknowledged the effectiveness of Kay’s sweeper pitch, which was a focus in his training.
Offensively for the Braves, Austin Riley was responsible for both RBIs. He contributed an RBI double in the third inning and an RBI single in the seventh.
Despite the Braves’ struggles with runners in scoring position, they managed enough offensive production to overcome the Sox. Kay mentioned the difficulty in competing against such a strong team and emphasized the need to be fully prepared against top-tier opponents.
Overall, the match displayed the high skill level and competitive nature of both teams, with strategic pitching playing a key role in the outcome.
