Sam Antonacci, left fielder for the Chicago White Sox, showcased an impressive play during the sixth inning on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. With the Sox holding a narrow lead and Antonacci batting with runners on second and third, he promptly hit a grounder back up the middle, which deflected off the glove of Twins second baseman Kody Clemens and rolled into center field. Antonacci’s hustle allowed him to turn the deflection into a double, as two runs scored.
“I just feel like I have a good knack for knowing when I can take that extra base and when not,” Antonacci explained. He acknowledged the occasional risk but emphasized that it often pays off.
White Sox closing pitcher Tyler Davis celebrated the team’s victory over the Twins in this crucial game. Antonacci showcased not only his batting skills with three doubles, but also contributed to two RBIs and two runs, helping his team secure a 10-1 victory in front of 32,024 fans at Rate Field. During a striking eighth inning, Randal Grichuk added a solo homer and Kyle Teel hit a three-run home run, cementing the Sox’s dominance in the series.
Manager Will Venable praised Antonacci’s performance: “He’s always thinking two and puts himself in a really good spot to get there.” This mindset was evident as Antonacci took advantage of the infield being drawn in, showcasing sharp base running and strategic hitting.
Reflecting on the standings, the White Sox (75-68) maintained their lead in the American League Central, ahead of the Cleveland Guardians by 2 1/2 games. The Guardians, sitting at 73-71, narrowly defeated the Detroit Tigers, while the Twin’s loss left them seven games behind.
The game also highlighted the White Sox bullpen’s strength. Opener Bryan Hudson and four relievers combined for an impressive 15 strikeouts with only one walk. Lefty Hagen Smith retired all nine batters he faced, achieving three strikeouts over three innings.
“Everybody threw the ball well,” said Smith, who now boasts a 0.56 ERA over 10 appearances.
Venable expressed admiration for Smith: “He has shown it all year. When he’s in the zone, he’s hard to square up. Gets a ton of swing-and-miss.” Smith’s efficient performance provided critical support for the team, allowing other pitchers like Grant Taylor to rest longer.
In addition to Smith’s achievement, Hudson, Jordan Hicks, Tyler Davis, and Taylor each contributed three strikeouts, showcasing an exceptional team effort.
“Tonight was all about the bullpen in my eyes,” Antonacci remarked. “It was really fun to watch the rest of the guys too, they did a really good job.”
The team’s offensive support came during the fifth inning, as Antonacci’s double set the stage for Munetaka Murakami to drive him home. His sixth inning hustle double further extended the Sox’s lead, followed by a scoring single from Grichuk. The Sox maintained momentum, adding runs in the seventh and eighth innings, ensuring a solid finish with an 8-5 record against the Twins this season.
“Nights like this show what we’re capable of,” commented Teel, highlighting the team’s potential as they focus on upcoming challenges.
