Kyle Whittingham is entering a new chapter in his storied coaching career. Despite his extensive experience, including guiding his team at two Rose Bowls, the upcoming November game might be the most pivotal he will ever face.
After 22 successful seasons with Utah, Whittingham took over the Michigan Wolverines following Sherrone Moore’s departure. Michigan’s fiercer rivalries present a different challenge than what he experienced in Utah.
“I haven’t learned much more than I already knew. It’s a national game. It’s ‘The Game’ as we call it. It’s immensely important to both sides. But for now, we have 11 games to focus on before that,” Whittingham stated at Big Ten Media Day.
He acknowledged the stakes of the game against Ohio State, saying, “If it comes down to that 12th game for all the marbles in the Big Ten, that would be ideal. I hope it happens.”
When asked about developing a rivalry mindset, Whittingham downplayed any personal animosity: “Hate’s a strong word,”
he commented, adding, “But I want to win that game as much as anyone in Ann Arbor.”
The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State has been intense in recent years. In 2024, Michigan achieved a surprising victory over Ohio State despite being heavy underdogs. The win sparked conflict as Michigan players planted their flag on Ohio State’s logo, leading to a brawl that required police intervention.
When Ohio State ended a four-game losing streak at Michigan’s stadium last November, Michigan players took measures to protect their own logo. The stakes remain high as both teams continue to vie for dominance in college football.
