Wildfires in Western U.S. and Canada Cause Evacuations and Fatalities

Evacuation orders are active across parts of the Western United States and Southwest Canada due to extreme heat and dry conditions fueling wildfires. The National Interagency Fire Center reported 183 new fires, including eight large ones, across the country since Saturday. More than 30,000 personnel with over 640 crews are battling these fires.

Across the United States, firefighters are combating over 94 large wildfires. In Utah, nearly a dozen wildfires have burned more than 300,000 acres. The Rocky Canyon Fire, located about 30 miles northeast of Salt Lake City, expanded to over 2,800 acres since its start on Friday and is entirely uncontained as of Sunday. This has led to evacuations in Morgan County.

Tragically, two pilots lost their lives when their helicopter crashed while fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire in Fishlake National Forest. Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed condolences, honoring their sacrifice in a social media post. The Widemouth 2 fire, burning more than 118,000 acres, is the largest in the state this year, surpassing the Babylon Fire. It was 27% contained as of Sunday morning.

In Oregon, bulldozer operator Jason Ensign died while battling the Wrights Spring Fire, which has spread over 33,000 acres and is still uncontained. Additional large fires are burning in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado. In Washington state, at least 60,000 residents were evacuated in the Spokane area due to fires that charred over 10,000 acres. Local fire officials reported significant progress in containing the flames.

An unusually dry and warm winter is contributing to this difficult fire season. In Canada, more than 100 active wildfires rage in the British Columbia province. The British Columbia Wildfire Service warns of continued high temperatures and wind gusts, especially in the southeastern parts and the Okanagan region, increasing the risk of lightning-induced fires.

A state of emergency exists in British Columbia, where the Bald Range wildfire has displaced over 20,000 people. British Columbia Premier David Eby assured residents that efforts are focused on equipping emergency crews with necessary resources.
