Wisconsin Governor Race: Crowley Leads in Initial Polls Against Tiffany

In the first poll following the primaries, Democrat David Crowley holds a narrow lead over Republican Tom Tiffany in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race. This contest is expected to be highly competitive during the 2026 midterm elections. With incumbent Governor Tony Evers retiring, this open seat in a critical swing state attracts significant attention.

Tom Tiffany, a congressman with backing from ex-President Donald Trump, secured the GOP nomination effortlessly. Meanwhile, David Crowley, Milwaukee County executive, narrowly won over state Representative Francesca Hong in the Democratic primary.

Poll Results and Reactions

“The race is competitive, but Crowley has a slight advantage,” said Henrik Schatzinger, political science professor at Ripon College.

A Platform Communications poll, reported by Wisconsin Public Radio, shows Crowley leading Tiffany by 4 points, with Crowley at 48% and Tiffany at 44%. Crowley’s favorability is at a net +17, whereas Tiffany holds a -5 rating.

Crowley commented that voters align with him, rejecting Tiffany’s “extreme” MAGA agenda. Tiffany, on the other hand, criticized Crowley’s tax policies in Milwaukee County and emphasized his focus on lowering taxes and costs.

Other Polls and Market Predictions

Additional polls, including one by GBAO, show Crowley with slight leads over Tiffany. Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket also favor Crowley, estimating his winning chance at around 75-78%.

Data Centers: A Central Issue

Data centers have emerged as a significant issue this election. Crowley faces GOP criticism for his stance, where he supports community decisions regarding the construction of data centers with specific conditions tied to renewable energy and infrastructure costs.

While Tiffany voiced positive sentiments about data centers earlier, he emphasized the need to ensure existing businesses aren’t adversely affected by new industry developments.

Primary Dynamics

During the primaries, Crowley overcame a substantial polling deficit against Hong, attributed partly to concerns over Hong’s ability to appeal to a broader electorate. Her identification as a democratic socialist and previous controversial statements drew attention.

Wisconsin’s Swing State Status

Wisconsin remains a critical swing state, having seen close election results in recent cycles. Trump’s narrow win in 2024 followed a Biden victory in 2020. The political landscape has shifted, with Republicans gaining traction in rural areas while Democrats rely on urban and suburban support.

Future Outlook

As the race unfolds, both candidates will intensify efforts to secure votes in what remains a deeply competitive political environment. Analysis from organizations like the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball indicates a competitive scenario, though some slight advantage is given to Crowley.
