Joel Castillo from Yorkville experienced a serious car accident in March on Interstate 88, yet he returned to football this fall. His performance as a 5-foot-9, 167-pound senior wide receiver and kick returner for the Yorkville Foxes remains strong, showing no signs of his past injuries. Castillo recounted the incident, recalling how a tire went through the windshield while driving home with his friend Lincoln Ijams from a workout in Chicago.
“I was driving home on the highway when a tire came off another car. It was a blessing that we walked away,” Castillo said. Ijams, now a freshman receiver at Butler, was a passenger when the accident occurred. “We escaped with minor injuries, just glass cuts and some bleeding,” Castillo continued.
The accident, however, did lead to significant injuries for Castillo, including losing a front tooth, a broken jaw, and a severe concussion. These injuries caused him to miss school and most of his summer training. “I was unable to participate for a couple of months due to neck, body, and back issues,” he stated.
Despite these setbacks, Castillo made a strong comeback. He played a crucial role in Yorkville’s 21-7 victory over Oswego East. He scored a touchdown with a 96-yard kickoff return and made pivotal plays, including a 22-yard catch on a fourth-and-13 scenario and an 11-yard catch for a touchdown. “Coach instructed me to reach the sticks, and I followed through,” Castillo commented. He praised his quarterback, Quintin Rink, for a perfect pass during these plays.
Yorkville coach Dan McGuire commended Castillo’s impact on the team, calling him an “explosive and essential player.” Castillo leads Yorkville with 29 receptions for 498 yards and three touchdowns. He also achieved 375 yards in kick returns. “My aspiration is to play at the next level,” Castillo mentioned, reflecting on his football dreams since childhood. Although recruiting has slowed, he remains focused on completing the season on a high note.
Reflecting on the accident, Ijams managed to inform Castillo’s mother, Holly, about the crash even before the police. “That call was incredibly frightening,” she said. She was relieved that both young men escaped with what she considers minor injuries. The accident disrupted eight planned college visits, allowing them only to attend one. Castillo will need further dental surgery.
Holly Castillo appreciated coach McGuire’s support during her son’s recovery, emphasizing his role in ensuring Joel completed his junior year. Despite missing two months, Joel was able to pass due to the coach’s dedication.
Castillo shared that he and Ijams trained with a well-known coach. “I believe in training with the best,” he said, sticking to his personal motto. Grateful for his recovery, Castillo stated, “I’m immensely thankful to play this season.”
