Za’Darius Smith Considered by Falcons Amidst Browns Rumors

Reports over the weekend suggested that Za’Darius Smith was ready to join the Cleveland Browns. However, Smith himself disputed these claims. A three-time Pro Bowl player with 70 1/2 career sacks, he questioned the accuracy of the reports and openly challenged a reporter who claimed to have the scoop. Adding to the confusion, Smith worked out for the Atlanta Falcons on Monday.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com stated on Sunday that Smith was on the verge of signing with the Browns. Even by midday Monday, negotiations were described as potentially being finalized. Despite these reports, Smith was in Atlanta. He voiced his uncertainty about the reports, posting on social media, ‘I haven’t signed yet’ and expressing surprise at the premature announcements.

The NFL wire, which monitors workouts and league transactions, confirmed Smith’s workout for the Falcons on Monday. This development raised eyebrows in media circles and highlighted interest from two teams in the same player.

The Browns’ interest in Smith likely stems from his previous tenure with the team across two seasons, wherein he started 25 games, notched 10 sacks, and 27 quarterback hits. Conversely, the Falcons’ interest is driven by their need for pass rushers. Their coach, Kevin Stefanski, is familiar with Smith from their previous time together at the Browns, before Stefanski’s dismissal.

Smith benefiting from dual interest is evident, as two teams bid for his skills. His choice of team could also reflect his view of his past experiences with Stefanski if he joins the Falcons.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” said Browns coach Todd Monken regarding Smith, deferring the question to general manager Andrew Berry.

The Falcons face pressing needs, with former first-round pick Jalon Walker out for the season due to an ACL tear and another first-round pick, James Pearce, suspended for eight games due to a policy violation. This urgent need for a pass rusher might influence the Falcons to outbid the Browns or sway Smith to join them.
