Maintaining a home may not require a full deep-clean for visitors to form an impression.
Subtle details often convey whether a space is cared for within minutes of entering.
A survey by BISSELL in 2024 revealed that keeping up with cleaning is not always simple.
Among 2,000 Americans polled, almost a quarter (24%) stated it’s more challenging than their full-time jobs.
While 36% spend one to two hours weekly cleaning and 33% allocate three to four hours, just 5% dedicate nine hours or more.
Where Should You Focus Your Efforts?
Newsweek consulted Heidi Phillips, an expert in cleaning and organization, about signs indicating a home’s condition and their remedies.
1. Unpleasant Odors
The initial observation anyone makes is your home’s smell upon entry. Ideally, there’s no odor or a pleasant one. Unwanted smells can stem from pets, cooking, bins, or fabrics.
Solution: Air your home daily for 20–30 minutes to circulate fresh air. Regularly dispose of rubbish, clean bins, and immediately clean appliance spills. Follow routine cleaning for microwaves, fridges, and ovens.
2. A Cluttered Entrance
First impressions matter. Ensure doorways are clean and clutter-free by storing shoes properly and hanging coats. A minimalist approach succeeds over piles of bags and muddy boots.
3. Dirty Floors
Floors are heavily used and quite noticeable when neglected. Regular vacuuming not only addresses dirt and dust but also removes allergens and enhances the home’s appeal.
Solution: Clean high-traffic areas daily and less-used spaces weekly. Pay attention to corners, edges, and incorporate routine mopping for hard floors.
4. Visible Clutter
Piles of clutter quickly give a home a chaotic and unclean appearance. Unopened mail and old items can contribute to this sense.
Solution: Develop the habit of clearing items daily. Avoid holding onto items unnecessarily.
5. Dirty Dishes Left Out
Leaving plates and pans lying around signals neglect to guests. Maintaining a clean kitchen prevents odors and deters pests.
Solution: Clean after each meal for hygiene and freshness.
6. Dusty Surfaces
Dust builds quickly, comprised of various materials. It’s more than dirt; it includes skin cells, fabric fibers, and outdoor debris.
Solution: Polish surfaces weekly and remove shoes at the door. This minimizes allergens.
7. A Dirty Draining Board
Sludge on draining boards encourages bacteria and odors. Regular cleaning and drying are vital.
Solution: Daily maintenance keeps draining boards clean.
8. An Untidy Bathroom
A neglected bathroom is uninviting. Regular cleaning and organization help maintain the space.
Solution: Wipe down surfaces and walls post-use. Clean the toilet regularly and keep towels dry and organized.
9. Smelly Drains
Debris in drains causes unpleasant smells. Automatically clearing hair and flushing drains prevents this.
Solution: Regular maintenance ensures cleaner, odor-free drains.
10. Unclean Furnishings
Upholstery gathers dirt and smells without regular cleaning. Clean cushion covers and throws to ensure freshness.
Solution: Routine cleaning helps your home feel more cared for and inviting.
A Clean, Inviting Home
Maintaining your home involves attention to detail rather than perfection. By focusing on areas guests notice, you can keep your space welcoming with efficient, routine cleaning.
