CBS’s renowned program “60 Minutes” has announced new additions to its team of correspondents and contributors as it begins its 59th season. Among the latest hires are Ross Douthat, a conservative columnist from The New York Times, and former “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell. These changes come under the leadership of the new executive producer, Nick Bilton, who communicated the updates in a staff memo shared publicly.
Joining Douthat and O’Donnell are author Sebastian Junger, and journalists Trevor Phillips and Gianna Toboni. These individuals will collaborate with current correspondents Lesley Stahl, Jon Wertheim, and Bill Whitaker. The recent staffing changes follow a significant reshuffle at “60 Minutes”, influenced by the network’s new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss.
Bari Weiss recently appointed Nick Bilton, who lacks substantial broadcast news experience, as executive producer. This led to the replacement of Tanya Simon, who had a tenure of over 30 years. Several correspondents, including Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega, and later Scott Pelley, departed the show after changes were implemented. Anderson Cooper also announced his departure, deciding to leave after two decades with the program, continuing his main role at CNN.
Both Bari Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski expressed enthusiasm for the new team. In an internal memo, they warmly welcomed the additions, expressing eagerness to see the fresh contributions to “60 Minutes”.
“He’s one of the preeminent public intellectuals in America today,” said Bilton of Douthat, highlighting his nearly 20 years at the Times and myriad publications. O’Donnell is described as a “powerhouse,” active across the network and launching her own podcast.
Bilton praised Junger for his influential nonfiction book, “The Perfect Storm,” underscoring its impact and storytelling style. Gianna Toboni is joining as a contributor, coming from senior roles at VICE News and VICE on HBO. Toboni’s wide-ranging journalism includes interviews with ISIS members and investigations into cartel activities in Mexico.
Also featured as a contributor is Trevor Phillips, based in London, who occupies the role of senior global affairs correspondent. Known for his incisive questions and holding power to account, Phillips is regarded as a major voice in the UK media landscape.
“60 Minutes” has been amidst turmoil, notably after President Donald Trump’s lawsuit over a contentious interview edit with Kamala Harris for the 2024 election. This lawsuit preceded a broader shakeup at CBS News, coinciding with significant leadership changes, including David Ellison’s new role as corporate leader of the parent company, Paramount, late last year.
