Three individuals lost their lives and nearly 20 first responders needed hospitalization in New Mexico following exposure to an unidentified substance at a residence east of Albuquerque. State police confirmed that four people were initially discovered unresponsive. One of these individuals survived and is undergoing treatment.
During the incident in Mountainair, 18 first responders displayed symptoms such as nausea and dizziness after coming into contact with the substance. These responders were admitted to a hospital and placed under quarantine for observation. Two are reported to be in serious condition. Hazmat teams are on-site and working to identify the substance, which is suspected to not be airborne; authorities assure there is no public threat.
“At this time, we do not know the exact cause,” stated Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto. “However, based on current information, there are indications that narcotics may be involved. The investigation is ongoing as officials work diligently to verify facts before concluding.”
Incident Overview in Mountainair
New Mexico State Police received a call to a residence at 306 Hanlon Avenue in Mountainair on Wednesday morning, responding to reports of a suspected overdose linked to an unknown substance. Officers, along with Torrance County Sheriff’s Office deputies, found four unresponsive individuals inside the home. Three of these individuals were later pronounced dead, according to NMSP.
Though 18 emergency personnel were hospitalized due to exposure, authorities do not consider the substance a public risk. “Albuquerque Fire Rescue HazMat teams are supporting efforts at the scene to identify the involved substance,” NMSP informed Newsweek. “Investigators suspect the substance might spread through contact, not through the air.”
Mayor’s Response to Community Concerns
Mountainair’s Mayor, Peter Nieto, addressed the situation on Facebook, emphasizing the town’s commitment to addressing drug issues. “Our first responders, law enforcement, medical personnel, and local officials work daily to safeguard this community and handle challenging situations,” he stated. “Addiction and substance abuse are wide-reaching issues affecting communities across our state and nation. Addressing them requires family support, accountability, education, and crucially, individuals willing to seek help.”
Understanding the residents’ anxiety and frustration, Nieto urged them to refrain from spreading rumors or misinformation while investigations continue. The mayor also encouraged locals to propose solutions for broader drug issues in the area, expressing his openness to community input.
