Robert O’Neill Responds to Graham Platner’s Controversial Social Media Posts
Robert O’Neill, a former U.S. Navy SEAL renowned for his role in eliminating Osama bin Laden, has commented on contentious social media posts from Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. The posts have recently come to light, drawing significant attention.
Mr. Platner was way out of line talking about a soldier that way.
O’Neill expressed his disapproval in response to a resurfaced Reddit post where Platner disparaged a soldier wounded in combat against Taliban fighters.
O’Neill stated, This is completely barbaric. He emphasized that military oath transcends politics. Every fight is for the person next to you, not for political agendas. Wishing harm on someone under fire contradicts what I’ve upheld all my life.
Platner’s Use of PTSD as Justification
Graham Platner has attributed his inflammatory posts to his battle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, O’Neill called Platner’s language vile hatred and rejected PTSD as a valid excuse.
PTSD shouldn’t cause repeated hostile remarks, which is what he’s exhibited on Reddit and elsewhere.
O’Neill suggested Platner seek Ibogaine therapy, a treatment O’Neill himself has used, if PTSD is impacting him drastically.
Platner’s controversial comments also extend to a video criticizing Chris Kyle, the celebrated figure from American Sniper, accusing Kyle of inflating civilian casualties.
Political Ramifications and Criticism from Veterans
O’Neill ascribes these comments to jealousy, noting that fame related to confirmed kills, like Kyle’s, can elicit envy among professionals. Despite this, such animosity is uncommon among veterans.
The controversy surrounding Platner has not garnered criticism from Congressional Democrats. O’Neill believes this silence reflects political motivations. He argues their focus remains on party votes rather than condemnation of misconduct.
Someone is backing him because other Democrats haven’t condemned this. They care about party votes, not public welfare.
Platner’s allies have dismissed some posts as locker room talk. O’Neill acknowledges some legitimacy but overall considers Platner unfit for the Senate due to his history.
Personal Struggles and Potential Redemption
Despite the criticisms, O’Neill recognizes Platner might be battling personal issues. He acknowledges that alcohol might influence reckless statements and emphasizes the possibility of redemption.
I’ve had drinks and said dumb things, too. I quit drinking partly because of that. If Platner moves forward positively, forgiveness is possible.
