Controversial Comments by Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner

Graham Platner, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the Senate in Maine, has come under scrutiny for past posts on a deleted Reddit account. In these posts, Platner harshly criticized the United States Army, referring to it as “absolute trash” and describing its personnel as “fat, lazy trash.” He expressed these views in April 2019, sharing his experiences from the Army and contrasting them with his service in the Marine Corps.

Platner reflected on his time in the military, acknowledging some positive aspects. While he praised certain fighting units for their effectiveness, he criticized the Army for lacking leadership and the warrior ethos found in the Marine Corps. He suggested the Army attracted individuals of a lower standard, but pointed out its solid light infantry and Special Operations Forces units.

“I want civilians to think our ability to fight is unmatched, but I also want us to be brutal in our internal criticism,” Platner stated in 2013, emphasizing the importance of honesty within the military.

Platner’s remarks about wounded veteran Teddy Daniels, who was awarded the Purple Heart, drew particular attention. Platner criticized Daniels’ battlefield tactics, using derogatory language in his commentary. These comments, along with other derogatory posts, have become focal points in the Maine Senate race against incumbent GOP Sen. Susan Collins.

Platner, who served in the Marine Corps and Maryland Army National Guard, acknowledged his past remarks. He expressed remorse, stating, “I don’t want you to judge me on the dumbest thing I ever wrote on the internet. Judge me on the person I am today.” The Senate hopeful attributes some behavior to combat trauma experienced during deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, highlighting the crude humor prevalent in military culture.

Platner’s statements have sparked criticism from veterans. Adam Schwarze, a former Navy SEAL running for Senate as a Republican in Minnesota, said, “We don’t make jokes about our brothers and sisters dying, that’s not normal.” Platner’s campaign has faced backlash, especially regarding remarks made during a 2024 podcast interview, where he questioned Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s reported achievements.

Bernadette Breslin, press secretary for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, condemned Platner’s comments as “disgusting and disqualifying.” The Platner campaign has not responded to requests for comment regarding the controversy.
