Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce. The debut occurred on Monday, marking a significant milestone for the Italian sports car maker. Luce is a five-seater and embodies one of Ferrari’s boldest ventures yet, as the company strives to meet the increasing demand for luxury electric vehicles (EVs).
The unveiling of the Luce highlights a broader trend in the luxury car industry, where manufacturers face missed targets and hefty commitments to electrification. Despite being loaded with over half a ton of battery cells and electrical components, the Luce promises to maintain Ferrari’s renowned performance characteristics. Engineers have designed it to achieve high-speed cornering, a challenging feat for electric sports cars.
Pricing for the Luce starts at over half a million dollars, prompting questions about whether traditional Ferrari enthusiasts will embrace this new model. The absence of the classic engine roar and signature aesthetics of traditional Ferraris is a significant shift. Angus MacKenzie, International Bureau Chief for MotorTrend, commented on Ferrari’s cautiousness. He noted it as a major investment in an uncertain market.
The creation of Luce is notable in Ferrari’s nearly 80-year history of producing road cars. In a unique collaboration, Ferrari joined forces with LoveFrom — a design agency established by Jony Ive, Apple’s former design chief, alongside industrial designer Marc Newson — to craft the car’s glass and polished aluminum structure. The vehicle is designed to reach speeds close to 200 miles per hour, maintaining Ferrari’s high-performance standards.
