Tim Ream, playing for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer, hopes to make the U.S. Men’s National Team roster for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. The tournament, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, presents a significant opportunity not only for the team but also for the sport’s growth in the country.
With high expectations, the U.S. team aims to perform well and inspire a new generation of fans. Despite the success of the women’s national team, questions linger about the sustainability of American soccer fandom. Ream remains optimistic about overcoming these doubts.
Ream stated, “I have no doubt in my mind that we can win in a knockout stage game. I have no doubt that we can win multiple games in the knockout stages.” His confidence is backed by his experience, having played all four games in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the U.S. was eliminated by the Netherlands in the Round of 16.
The 2022 squad was the second-youngest in the tournament. Their lack of experience was evident, and Ream believes the current team is better prepared. Ream, the only player with a connection to the 1994 U.S. World Cup, is a strong candidate for the final roster due to his leadership and prior experience.
Ream is dedicated to his team, ready to fulfill any role required of him. “If that’s starting every game and playing every minute like I did in 2022… I’m willing and able to do anything that’s asked of me,” he asserted.
The pressure to perform is undeniable. Ream acknowledged the hopes riding on the 2026 World Cup and its potential impact on American soccer’s growth, saying, “People want to believe that [soccer in America] is going to continue to grow and that [the 2026 World Cup] will be an even bigger catalyst than 1994.” The 1994 tournament led to the creation of Major League Soccer, a pivotal moment in the sport’s U.S. history.
Success takes various forms for Ream. On the field, the goal is to win games and make people proud. Off the field, he aims to inspire the country’s youth and spark a passion for soccer among future players. “I think the biggest hope and dream would be to say we’ve inspired our own country of 330-plus million people,” Ream shared, emphasizing the importance of fostering a love of soccer among children.
