After a wet Memorial Day weekend, the South faces further weather challenges. Approximately 15 million people from Louisiana to Georgia are under flood alerts as the area anticipates more heavy rains and thunderstorms. Some regions could experience up to 2 inches of rainfall.
Excessive rain is forecast across areas extending from the Carolinas to western Texas.
For southwest Texas, particularly around Midland and Fort Stockton, there is a risk of large hail, damaging winds, and potential tornadoes. Over Memorial Day weekend, pictures and videos showed a flooded driveway in Mississippi and several cars stuck in inches of rain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
On Tuesday, New Orleans has a flood watch in place until 7 p.m. local time, with rain and storms continuing throughout the evening. An inch of rain is expected, with some places receiving up to 2 inches. Strong, stationary thunderstorms already impacted the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Memorial Day.
Atlanta is also under a flood watch until 11 p.m. local time, with rainfall ranging from 0.75 to 1.25 inches, capable of reaching up to 2 inches in some spots. This could mean hourly rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches, creating flash flooding risks even outside designated flood watches.
Further precipitation is predicted for the region throughout the week, with specific rainfall amounts pending.
