The Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of Terry Pitchford, a Mississippi man, highlighting concerns about racial bias in jury selection. In a close 5-4 vote, the court agreed that Pitchford should have been allowed to challenge the dismissal of four Black potential jurors in his trial.
This decision affirms a lower court’s action to vacate Pitchford’s conviction and remove him from death row. The case centered on the murder of a shopkeeper for which Pitchford had been previously convicted. Concerns over racial bias in the jury selection process played a pivotal role in the decision.
