After the departure of Deebo Samuel in the 2025 offseason and the decision not to play Brandon Aiyuk again, the San Francisco 49ers have strengthened their wide receiver lineup. The team selected De’Zhaun Stribling in the second round of April’s draft and signed Christian Kirk during free agency. However, the most notable acquisition was two-time All-Pro Mike Evans. Evans spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being drafted 7th overall in 2014.
Quarterback Brock Purdy expressed enthusiasm about Evans joining the 49ers during an interview with Laura Britt from NBC Sports. Purdy acknowledged Evans’ high expectations, given his Super Bowl experience with legendary quarterback Tom Brady. This brings added pressure to Purdy.
“Just, like, being around him and his presence and understanding, you know, what it’s going to take to play with him,” Purdy commented, as per NFL Media. “And just like honestly like, the good pressure that it brings, like, alright, ‘I have a guy that is demanding success and demanding to be great’ and I love that. I want to play with guys like that.”
Purdy also mentioned playing with talent such as George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, and now including Evans as a big target. Evans’ understanding and experience with quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield offer valuable insights. Purdy aims to build chemistry with Evans as the season progresses.
Evans, 32, has signed a three-year contract with the 49ers worth up to $42.4 million. Last season, he participated in eight games, battling injuries such as a hamstring issue, concussion, and broken clavicle. Despite these setbacks, he made 30 receptions for 368 yards and scored three touchdowns.
Evans’ contribution will be vital for the team’s success this season. The 49ers managed to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild-Card Round but faced a heavy loss to the Seattle Seahawks, 41-6, in the Divisional Round. The team required more receiver power during this match, as Jauan Jennings was the leading receiver with only two catches for 23 yards.
