Federal authorities have charged Brendan John Geier, a 26-year-old from Madison, New Jersey, following violent incidents involving ICE agents in Newark. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) reported that Geier was part of a group blocking a road outside Delaney Hall detention center and allegedly attacked federal officers.
The DOJ stated that when ICE deportation officers asked the group to disperse, Geier resisted and assaulted the officers. He reportedly kicked and bit two officers, resulting in their hospitalization. Geier faces allegations of assaulting federal officers and causing bodily injury.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche publicly condemned the actions, noting that these events went beyond peaceful protest. In a statement shared on social media, Blanche emphasized accountability for assaults on federal officers. Photos of injured ICE agents have been circulated, highlighting the severity of the injuries.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin supported law enforcement in his statement, reinforcing the commitment to prosecute those attacking officers. U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer and Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas also stressed the criminal nature of these assaults and the importance of protecting law enforcement personnel.
The ongoing demonstrations at Delaney Hall have persisted for over a week, attracting both anti-ICE agitators and counterprotesters. Tensions have risen as state and federal authorities address the situation. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, who had shown support for anti-ICE demonstrators, instructed state police to manage public safety around the detention center. Criticism arose from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over a lack of cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
This clash reflects broader tensions around immigration enforcement and the challenges faced by federal officers in maintaining order. The DOJ continues to investigate the incidents, reaffirming its stance against violence toward federal agents.
