Hate crime charges have been lodged against Larry Montes, 46, from the Bronx, for causing a disturbance during Shabbat services at Manhattan’s Central Synagogue. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Montes faces two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime, along with other charges.
During the incident, synagogue security escorted Montes out as he struck a congregant, vandalized synagogue property, and assaulted a security team member. A police sergeant stationed as security at the synagogue quickly took Montes into custody. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the attack during the live broadcast of the service as “horrifying,” emphasizing that every New Yorker should practice their faith without fear of violence. His sentiments were echoed by Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, who all condemned the attack.
Following the incident, additional police security was deployed, allowing Shabbat services to continue the following day. Rabbi Rebecca Thau addressed the congregation, reflecting on the intrusion of violence during a moment meant for spiritual focus, highlighting the challenge of maintaining peace in a flawed and often cruel world.
