Tennis champion Novak Djokovic mentioned a health issue following his unexpected departure from the Cincinnati Open on Saturday. He lost to 25-year-old Thiago Agustín Tirante in the second round. Throughout the match, Djokovic, 39, appeared to struggle and at one point seemed to vomit, necessitating a medical timeout. The match lasted nearly three hours before Tirante overcame the 24-time Grand Slam winner.
Djokovic described the match as “not enjoyable.” He informed reporters after the match, “It’s just a condition that I have, healthwise, that has been bothering me for the past couple of years. A lot of issues, especially when it is humid and it is hot.” The Serbian athlete did not disclose or expand on the specific health issue. Although he had anticipated the humidity, Djokovic noted that nerves and other factors exacerbated the situation.

After the match, Djokovic congratulated Tirante, who described the victory as possibly the best of his career. Tirante praised Djokovic as one of the sport’s most significant figures. “I think I really did a good job inside the court,” Tirante remarked. “I managed very well the nerves of playing against a legend like Novak.” Djokovic saved 13 of the 15 break points but was broken in the ninth game of the final set. Tirante secured the win with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 score in 2 hours and 44 minutes.
Historically, Djokovic has performed well at the Cincinnati Open, yet this loss marked his record there as 45-13, according to the ATP Tour. This defeat might signify his last appearance at the tournament. When questioned about his return, Djokovic expressed uncertainty. “I certainly hope so, but it looks more likely not, unfortunately. But let’s see what the future brings.”
This event was Djokovic’s first competition since losing to Italy’s Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon in July. Earlier this month, he withdrew from the Canadian Open, likely to rest before the U.S. Open, beginning on August 30. Djokovic has claimed the U.S. Open title four times.
