President Donald Trump has hinted at possibly leading his own rally in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday due to performers withdrawing. He suggested that scheduled artists were having “the yips.” Trump mentioned the idea of substituting what he called “highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists'” with a speech from “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.”
In a detailed Truth Social post, Trump noted that artists set to perform expressed concerns. He contemplated stepping in himself, claiming to attract “much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime” without the need for a guitar. Announcements from several artists originally booked for the President’s Freedom 250 celebration have confirmed their withdrawal. This has impacted the event’s lineup significantly.
The festival is a nationwide endeavor to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Nevertheless, disputes arose regarding which musicians committed to perform. Of those featured on the original promotional poster, only three are reportedly set to participate. Newsweek reached out to Freedom 250 via email on Saturday.
As part of the semiquincentennial celebrations, an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) card will be hosted by the President at the White House on Flag Day, June 14, coinciding with Trump’s 80th birthday. The event promises a 5,000-seat arena and an octagon-shaped cage on the South Lawn.
Trump’s Comments on Freedom 250
In his Truth Social statement, Trump revealed directing his team to consider turning the event into an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally”. The rally would be at the same time and location, but limited to “Great Patriots.” He expressed a preference for “Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN.” He portrayed this potential rally as a moment of national renewal, asserting, “two years ago, the United States was DEAD” but is now the “‘HOTTEST’ Country anywhere in the World.” He envisioned the event as a “Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America.”
By sharing his thoughts on Truth Social, Trump enjoined his representatives to evaluate the possibility of organizing an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” in Washington, D.C., at the specified time and place.
Various artists, including Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, Martina McBride, Milli Vanilli, and the Commodores, have opted out after discovering the event was organized by Freedom 250, connected to the Trump administration.
It’s common for Trump to clash with artists who refuse to participate in his events. Observers highlight that Trump’s rallies effectively energize his base, often taking precedence over traditional campaign strategies.
Understanding Freedom 250
Freedom 250 is a public-private entity tasked with spearheading celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary. Its schedule includes a significant 16-day festival on the National Mall, styled as the Great American State Fair, with free admission. Organizers advertise it as a main feature of the nationwide America250 celebrations.
The initiative aims to honor history, engage all Americans, and features live entertainment, cultural exhibits, military displays, and programming from all states and territories. While intended as a nonpartisan event, reports suggest Trump administration backing, leading to controversy. Numerous artists listed on promotional materials claim they were unaware of any political ties.
Despite most acts withdrawing, Freedom 250 advances in promoting the fair as a national celebration aimed at unity. The organization emphasizes its mission to “uplift and unite America” in the semiquincentennial year.
Rachel Reisner, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, affirmed to Newsweek via email, “Freedom 250 focuses on our signature events to honor our history and engage Americans—welcoming everyone who shares our goal of commemorating this milestone to uplift and unite America.”
