Virginia authorities have arrested a 19-year-old in connection with a mass shooting at Virginia State University. The suspect, identified as Camron Harris from Henrico, Virginia, is not affiliated with the university as a student. The shooting occurred on Saturday and resulted in five people being injured, with one victim critically wounded.
The victims have not been publicly identified, but officials confirmed that only one is a university student. An extensive manhunt followed the shooting, eventually leading to Harris’s discovery in a campus dormitory closet.
Police Announcement on Arrest
The police have obtained felony warrants against Harris for four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in committing a felony. He is currently being held without bail at Chesterfield County Jail, with the possibility of additional charges being brought against him.
The shooting took place early in the morning, followed by the arrest of Harris a few hours later. Chesterfield Police provided details on the incident, noting officers responded to gunfire at around 1:28 a.m. near the VSU residence halls.
University Response
In a statement, Virginia State University acknowledged the anxiety the incident has caused within their community. The university assured an increased police presence on campus as investigations continue. They also advised students to check their emails for updates on safety and support services.
Following the incident, a lockdown at VSU was initiated but has since been lifted. Virginia State University, a historically Black institution, is located approximately 25 miles south of Richmond in Ettrick, Virginia.
