An event focused on reducing gun violence and building community connections took center stage on Saturday at Bardwell Residences in Aurora. The four-hour event, titled Lighting the Way to a Safer Aurora, was organized by Project Safe Aurora, with the Kane County Health Department serving as the lead agency.
This initiative included live music, free giveaways such as Chromebooks, gas cards, and biometric gun safes, and guest presentations about safety. Elizabeth Nunez, a violence prevention specialist from the health department, emphasized the event’s significance. She stated, “This is part of community health and things that affect the community, and violence is one of them. Project Safe Aurora focuses on gun violence prevention. Gun violence impacts not only individuals but the entire community. Through this and our coalition, we want to foster community trust and awareness of available resources and promote safe gun storage.”
The program began with funding from a state grant provided by the Reimagine Public Safety Act. According to officials, the initiative targeted areas with high concentrations of gun violence, building a coalition based on community data and innovative strategies to address violence prevention.
Over the years, Project Safe Aurora has grown to include over 27 organizations, ranging from law enforcement to domestic violence groups and youth development initiatives. These organizations collaborate with diverse perspectives on violence prevention. Nunez has also engaged with neighborhood groups and community leaders to raise awareness of the project, contributing to the development of a community safety action plan.
It encompasses three different strategies focused on data trends from the Aurora police transparency hub, calls of service, and incident reports,” Nunez explained. “We also review monthly incident reports based on gun violence trends.
Nunez noted that much of the violence originates from Aurora’s East Side, involving individuals aged 14 to 24. The strategy involved partnering with the East Aurora School District to implement a restorative practice program that engages schools and administrators to build trust.
Aurora Alderman Jonathan Nunez, representing the 4th Ward, commended the effort and highlighted that months of preparation went into the event. “Elizabeth Nunez and the Kane County Health Department have invested a lot of time since a conversation last fall about Aurora’s shooting data,” he said. “Through monthly meetings, efforts have focused on reducing gun violence, particularly among our youth.”
Ilda Valdez from Aurora attended the speaking sessions to understand more about the project. “I think bringing more community awareness to this issue is crucial, so more people step up,” she remarked. “We need to support law enforcement and social services, and understanding gun control challenges is essential.”
