Tempers flared outside a California championship track meet featuring a trans athlete, leading to a confrontation between “Save Girls Sports” activists and pro-LGBTQ advocates. Police presence was increased as a precaution.
The event took place at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state championship in Clovis. A press conference was organized by local LGBTQ advocacy groups, Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action. The conference was held in support of trans athlete AB Hernandez, who aimed to secure state titles in three girls’ jumping events.
Nereyda Hernandez, mother of AB Hernandez, and other supporters spoke in favor of the athlete’s participation. Tensions rose near the end of the event when “Save Girls Sports” activists arrived, resulting in a heated exchange. Police were on standby, but the confrontation eventually dissipated without escalation.
The Clovis Police Department chose not to comment when contacted by Fox News Digital. Video footage captured during the incident showed the intensity of the exchange between activists from both sides.
Beth Bourne, a well-known “Save Girls Sports” activist, led the counterprotest and shared her perspective with Fox News Digital. Bourne stated, “I wanted to express my views on the fairness towards all girl athletes and AB Hernandez regarding the truth about biological realities.”
Daisy Gardner, a pro-LGBTQ activist, responded to Bourne’s comments, encouraging understanding and personal growth.
The CIF state finals have been embroiled in controversy for the second consecutive year due to Hernandez’s participation. Last year’s event also witnessed protests and a pro-transgender activist’s arrest for allegedly assaulting a “Save Girls Sports” supporter.
