WHO Director-General Visits Ebola-Affected Regions Amid Rising Cases

WHO’s Efforts to Tackle Ebola Crisis

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, visited the Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo to address the escalating Ebola crisis. Over 1,100 suspected cases have been reported in the area.

During his visit, Ghebreyesus emphasized the potential for survival without vaccines if timely healthcare is sought. He highlighted these points in a post shared on X after inspecting an Ebola treatment facility in Bunia.

Progress in Treatment

In Bunia, recent developments showed progress in treatment. Four nurses were discharged following recovery from Ebola, alongside a laboratory worker, bringing the total recoveries to five in the DRC.

Dr. Jean Kaseya from The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention noted more than 1,100 suspected cases under investigation in both the DRC and Uganda. As of May 30, 263 cases and 43 deaths were confirmed.

Challenges in Containment

The DRC government and WHO face significant challenges, such as early detection and isolation of cases, effective contact tracing, and dignified burials. They declared the outbreak a public health emergency but not a pandemic.

This outbreak ranks as the third-largest since Ebola’s discovery, with rapid spread and community anger posing hurdles. Medical teams, including MSF, are calling for increased support on the ground.

Suspected Cases Abroad

Concerns extend globally as health authorities in Brazil investigate potential cases. In Sao Paulo, a suspected patient tested positive for meningitis, while one in Rio de Janeiro was diagnosed with malaria. Both cases are still under assessment for Ebola.

In Italy, a potential case in Cagliari involving a returnee from Congo tested negative, according to the health ministry.
