Diverse Dinosaur Movies Compete at Box Office

This weekend saw two distinct dinosaur-themed movies claim a respectable share of the North American box office. However, neither managed to outperform Spider-Man: Brand New Day or dethrone The Odyssey from second place. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie and The End of Oak Street, targeted at young children and older audiences respectively, vied for third place. Studio estimates on Sunday indicated that The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, had a slight edge with an estimated $21 million compared to the animated Paw Patrol movie’s $20.5 million.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued to lead, garnering an additional $70 million in its third weekend. This brought the film’s domestic total to $785.8 million, making it the fourth-largest domestic release. Internationally, it accumulated $118.7 million, pushing its global total past $2 billion. The Odyssey maintained its second-place position with $23.2 million domestically and $98 million from international markets, including $36.6 million from China, totaling over $1.2 billion globally.

Despite not taking the lead, The End of Oak Street exceeded expectations with a $21 million debut across 3,446 locations. It also achieved $26 million internationally, reaching a $47 million global opening on a reported $80 million budget. David Robert Mitchell’s film features McGregor and Hathaway as parents in a prehistoric setting, receiving positive critical response with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience feedback was lukewarm, with a B CinemaScore. Half of the audience recommended it to friends in PostTrak exit polls.

Meanwhile, family audiences turned out for Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, released by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. The PG-rated film is the third in the Paw Patrol franchise and scored an A CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences. Its global earnings stand at $69 million.

In fifth place, the documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts earned $4 million from 724 screens. Other new releases made their mark: Six: The Musical Live debuted in sixth with $3 million, and The Brink of War followed with $2.7 million. The Tamil romance Vishwanath & Sons secured the tenth spot with $1.6 million. The Rivals of Amziah King, a crime thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, made just over $1 million. The biopic Tony grossed $706,676 from limited showings, with plans to expand.

The summer box office has been robust, with ticket sales reaching $4.2 billion, about 5.7% higher than summer 2019, yet slightly trailing the 2013 record summer by $130 million, driven by Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2. Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak suggests 2023 may rank among the top five summers by revenue, with annual figures nearing $6.9 billion.
