Jerome Powell, a U.S. Federal Reserve Governor, emphasized the risks associated with a politicized Federal Reserve. He also advocated for protecting democratic institutions. These remarks were made during his acceptance of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, marking his first public statement since leaving his role as the head of the central bank.
Powell highlighted the lengthy process required to build democratic institutions while noting how quickly they can be undermined. He stressed the importance of maintaining these institutions, including the Fed, courts, and universities, which he views as vital to the nation’s success and global standing.
Powell described the Fed as undergoing a ‘stress test.’ This is attributed to President Donald Trump’s attempts to dismiss Fed Governor Lisa Cook, demands for Powell’s own resignation, and a criminal investigation involving Powell.
His term as chair ended on May 15, succeeded by Kevin Warsh on May 22. Yet, Powell chose to remain a Fed governor due to perceived ongoing threats to the Fed’s independence. This decision blocks Trump from appointing another board member for the time being. Powell warned about the implications of administrations removing Fed officials based on policy disagreements.
The Fed’s design allows it to make monetary decisions free from political pressure. Powell stated that such safeguards have consistently served the public interest and received respect from administrations of both parties. Removing officials over policy differences risks future administrations doing the same, potentially eroding public trust in the Fed.
While announcing Powell’s award, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation praised him for protecting the Fed as one of the country’s essential apolitical institutions, showcasing courage against significant personal and professional risks.
This year, the award also honored the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Their recognition stemmed from the community’s response to increased immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities, including protests and monitoring of government actions.
