Jill Biden recently shared insights into her support for former President Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign despite concerns about his health. During an interview with Craig Melvin on TODAY, she discussed her memoir, View From the West Wing: A Memoir, where she writes about backing her husband after his challenging debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024. That debate ultimately led him to withdraw from the race.
When asked if she would encourage him to run again if she could rewind time, Jill Biden reflected on the difficulty of that decision. As I look back, would I want to put Joe through the hurt and the pain that we felt during that time? Never,
she emphasized. It had to be his decision because he had to live with that decision the rest of his life.
In the aftermath of the debate, Jill Biden publicly praised her husband’s performance. However, doubts arose about Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities. Jill expressed her internal struggle, saying, My mind is racing. What do I say to him? I’ve got to lift him up,
acknowledging the need for support despite any private concerns.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee after Biden’s withdrawal. She wrote in her book, 107 Days, that the decision was personal and not related to mental incapacity.
Joe Biden has faced allegations of cognitive decline, including memory challenges, which he has actively defended against. He filed a lawsuit to prevent the release of recordings related to his memoir. In reports about mishandled classified materials, his memory issues were noted, though denied by the White House.
The former president responded to claims in the book Original Sin by journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, stating, They are wrong. There’s nothing to sustain that,
dismissing concerns about his mental fitness.
Health challenges have been a focal point for Joe Biden. In May 2025, he revealed having aggressive prostate cancer, which has metastasized to his bones. Jill Biden shared, He’s doing OK. Joe will live with cancer the rest of his life.
Her remarks highlight the ongoing health battle faced by the former president.
