Choosing an electric vehicle can be challenging. Many buyers find an electric SUV practical for daily use. New models can handle everyday commutes and occasional trips out of town. They offer spacious interiors and innovative technology. Among the options, the Tesla Model Y and the Toyota bZ are worth considering.
Range and Charging
Previously known as the bZ4X, Toyota’s electric SUV has been revised and now offers a longer range. The 2026 bZ’s front-wheel-drive model goes up to 314 miles per charge according to EPA estimates. Edmunds confirmed this with a test, achieving 331 miles, a commendable distance for a compact electric SUV. Different Model Y versions vary in range, with the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive reaching 357 miles according to the EPA, though Edmunds has not tested this version.
Both SUVs performed similarly in fast-charging tests at public stations. They gained approximately 100 miles of range in 15 minutes. However, Tesla’s network of Supercharger stations offers added convenience for Model Y owners.

Driving Experience and Interior Space
The Tesla Model Y provides an engaging driving experience. It accelerates quickly and offers a smooth, stable ride. The interior is insulated from external noise, and the front seats have multiple adjustments for comfort on long journeys.
The Toyota bZ, redesigned from the previous bZ4X, offers quick acceleration in both single- and dual-motor setups. In tests, the front-wheel-drive bZ beat the base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive in 0-to-60 mph acceleration tests. Although it rides comfortably, the bZ lacks the cornering stability of the Model Y. The Model Y offers more rear legroom, accommodating adults and providing space for child safety seats. It also has more cargo capacity.

Technology
Tesla’s infotainment system is noted for its intuitive interface and responsiveness. Features like dual wireless chargers and advanced driver assistance make it standout. The Full Self-Driving feature allows hands-free driving on highways and city streets, but lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
The Toyota bZ features a new 14.1-inch touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly. It includes dual wireless chargers and four USB-C ports. The bZ’s driver assistance features are comprehensive, but its hands-free driving feature works only at low highway speeds.
Winner: Model Y
Pricing and Value
The base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive starts at $41,630 but lacks some desirable features. The Premium version, with additional power and a refined interior, is priced at $51,630.
The Toyota bZ begins at $36,495 and is well-equipped. The top-tier bZ Limited, which rivals the Model Y Premium, is priced at $46,895 and includes all-wheel drive.

Edmunds says: The Toyota bZ has become a more appealing electric SUV, particularly for value-conscious buyers with its low starting price. Despite Toyota’s significant improvements, the Tesla Model Y remains the standard for technology, performance, and overall quality.
