Casey Wasserman Addresses Calls for Resignation as LA28 Chairman Amidst Controversy

The list of politicians demanding Casey Wasserman’s resignation as chairman of LA28 expanded rapidly due to emails with Ghislaine Maxwell revealed in the Epstein files. Despite four months of controversy seemingly threatening his role in L.A.’s first Olympic Games since 1984, Wasserman remained confident in his position.

When asked if he considered resigning, Wasserman replied, “No and yes.” He confirmed regular discussions with Mayor Karen Bass, who was one of many calling for his exit.

“Our conversations are between us,” Wasserman stated. They reportedly share a vision for delivering successful Games.

“Thoughtful and productive conversations continue between me and the mayor,”

he said, emphasizing cooperation.

Bass is currently vying for a second term amid fierce competition. The political landscape sees Spencer Pratt and Nithya Raman battling for a place on the ballot. Additionally, California faces a heated gubernatorial race between Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra.

Wasserman noted that political transitions have been constant since the Games’ bid began in 2015. He stressed lasting partnerships with federal, state, and local entities.

“Politics change, but our team maintains critical relationships,” Wasserman shared.

Appointed by ex-Mayor Eric Garcetti, Wasserman kept a low profile after his name emerged in connection to the Epstein files. Though calls for his resignation grew, an investigation confirmed his leadership value, backed by LA28’s executive committee.

IOC members recently visiting L.A. gave full support. Nicole Hoevertsz, IOC Coordination Commission chair, praised LA28 for readiness and success markers like sponsorship and ticket sales.

The organizing committee targets a $2.5 billion sponsorship goal, having secured $2 billion already. Ticket sales are robust, with over 4 million sold in an initial drop. A second ticket drop begins in August, with lottery registration open until July 22

CEO Reynold Hoover assured transparency in ticket assignments as venue seating becomes clearer. He refuted any potential “bait and switch” tactics, learning from FIFA World Cup ticketing issues.

“Expect clarity; no bait and switch,” Hoover clarified.

While examining FIFA World Cup operations, Hoover acknowledged the difference in scale between soccer matches and the Olympics, handling plans for 11,000 athletes and unprecedented Paralympic dimensions.
