China’s Role in the East Africa Ebola Outbreak

In the midst of the Ebola outbreak in East Africa, the United States has scaled back its involvement compared to previous crises. This shift leaves China, a global economic leader with substantial expertise in epidemic control and biotechnology, as a potential key player in addressing the crisis.

Mongbwalu, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is at the center of the current outbreak. Treatment centers there face shortages of essential equipment, medicine, and supplies. The lack of testing compounds the challenge, especially because the Bundibugyo virus, responsible for the outbreak, lacks an approved vaccine or treatment.

Despite China’s significant investments in the region, there is uncertainty regarding its willingness to address what may become the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history. With the U.S. reducing its involvement, China encounters less pressure to take decisive action. Beijing’s cautious approach suggests it may not act swiftly in such a high-risk environment.

“Now we are in this moment of truth,” said Bradley Parks, executive director of AidData, highlighting China’s potential opportunity to fill the leadership gap left by the U.S. “We just don’t know if they have the appetite to step into a leadership role.”

Recently, China made a tentative move approximately three weeks after the outbreak’s declaration by sending a team of medical experts to Kinshasa, over 1,000 miles from the outbreak’s epicenter.
