A 17-year-old student from Britain, Alexander Browder, has been sanctioned by Russia, making him one of the youngest individuals to face such measures. He is the son of Bill Browder, a former financier who turned into an anti-corruption advocate.
Alexander Browder revealed an alleged cryptocurrency money laundering scheme orchestrated by Russia. His report in March accused Moscow of creating its own stablecoin to bypass sanctions from the U.S., U.K., and EU.
Browder explained, “My work is following the money,” noting that Russia’s decision to sanction him signals discomfort. He stated, “The Kremlin’s sanctioning me is proof that my investigation struck a nerve.”
On June 2, Russia’s Foreign Ministry banned him from entering the country, citing “disinformation” as the reason. However, Alexander Browder remains undeterred, stating, “Russia can place my name on any list it chooses; it won’t alter the facts.”
The report accused the Russian government of creating a stablecoin called A7A5 in 2025, used for $100 billion in transactions primarily on crypto exchanges in Kyrgyzstan.
Browder’s interest in exposing corruption stems from his family’s background. His father, Bill Browder, has been engaged in an ongoing confrontation with Russia since 2005 after revealing an alleged $230 million tax fraud. The elder Browder managed the Hermitage Fund, the largest foreign investment fund in Russia during the 1990s.
Tragedy struck when his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was tortured and killed in a Russian jail in 2009 while investigating the fraud. Bill Browder has committed his life to pursuing justice for Magnitsky.
Alexander describes his father as an inspiration but acknowledges the generational gap in understanding technology. “It takes someone my age to grasp these concepts,” he explained, emphasizing the role of cryptocurrencies in Russian operations.
Despite ongoing threats, Alexander Browder continues to push for the truth. He commented, “Living in fear only makes it worse. Exposing the funding of Russian violence is my way of contributing to justice.”
Amidst conflicts, particularly in Ukraine, he is resolute in his mission. “My goal is to help stop this violence, and if I can contribute, I’ll be satisfied,” he affirmed.
