Trump’s Misinformation Campaign on California Mail Ballots

President Trump is raising doubts about election outcomes by pointing to the slow count of mail ballots in California. He suggests, without evidence, that the election process is fraudulent.

By questioning the Los Angeles mayoral race, Trump continues his efforts to undermine trust in elections. He described the rise of a Democratic candidate as a scam, reinforcing his narrative of election fraud.

“Not possible for Spencer Pratt to have lost the L.A. runoffs after the big lead he had,” Trump shared on social media. He further compared the situation to a “3rd World Nation.”

During the recent election night, Spencer Pratt, a Republican endorsed by Trump, initially led against Democrat Nithya Raman. However, as mail ballots were counted, Raman moved ahead. This occurrence, known as the “red mirage,” is a common phenomenon where initial leads change as more votes are counted.

Trump has used this shift as alleged proof of voter fraud, extending his crusade to diminish public confidence in elections. His actions provide a glimpse into how he might respond if faced with unfavorable results in future elections, particularly those affecting congressional control.

Mail ballot voting, preferred by many Democrats, has been a target for Trump. He has repeatedly implied its use is problematic, despite offering no supporting evidence. Speaking to Republican legislators in March, Trump suggested that enacting strict voter ID laws could help Republicans maintain their majority.
