The Northeast is preparing for a surge of summerlike weather as hot and humid conditions settle in on Thursday and Friday. This change brings the potential for dangerous storms.
Summer Heat Moves East
The central United States, which has experienced rising temperatures recently, will see this warm air mass move into the Northeast. This shift might turn what has been a relatively pleasant week along the East Coast into one marked by discomfort.
Meteorologist Bryan Ramsey from the National Weather Service in New York describes this weather as “sweltering.” Although he clarifies it won’t reach the extreme 100-degree mark, the humidity will contribute to an oppressive atmosphere.
Raised in Houston, Ramsey is familiar with sticky conditions, and he warns that the upcoming days will be quite uncomfortable. A dense air mass following a warm front will make people feel sticky, adversely affecting the body’s ability to cool itself.
Humidity Intensity
While June typically introduces warmer temperatures, this week mirrors an unusual warm spell experienced in April. However, this time it’s coupled with tropical moisture, heightening the discomfort levels significantly.
Current forecasts suggest that high temperatures across much of the East Coast will range from 90 to 95 degrees. According to Bob Oravec, a senior forecaster with the Weather Prediction Center, these conditions approach record levels, emphasizing that while not extreme, they still warrant caution.
Potential Break in Heat
On a hopeful note, storms may alleviate the heat. These weather conditions bring not only heat but also the possibility of relief through rainfall.
