At least three tornadoes struck areas near Chicago on Thursday, causing significant destruction. Homes were leveled, and power poles and trees were uprooted, creating widespread havoc. The severe weather led to flight cancellations and left hundreds of thousands without electricity in the Midwest and Northeast.
Impact on Indiana and Illinois
In Merrillville, Indiana, approximately 33 miles southeast of Chicago, a vast tornado prompted police to urge residents to seek shelter. By evening, the town faced blocked roads and damaged homes, and a portion of a high school’s roof was missing.
Emergency crews were also deployed to Streator, Illinois, where tornado damage had disrupted the community. The city hall served as a reunification center for displaced residents, while the Red Cross established a shelter. Mayor Tara Bedei confirmed no fatalities had been reported and praised the quick response of emergency teams.
Flight Disruptions
Strong storms led to delays and cancellations at airports, including those in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. The Northeast faced added strain from high heat and humidity.
Deaths and Injuries
The storms followed previous destruction in the Midwest on Wednesday, which caused power outages, building damage, and flight cancellations. In Des Moines, Iowa, a 54-year-old man died when a tree fell on him during the storms. No other deaths or injuries were immediately reported.
Personal Accounts of the Tornadoes
In Elkhart, Indiana, resident Jennifer Hall faced a crisis as winds and rain intensify. A tree limb pierced the roof of her rental home, forcing her to use buckets to catch the rain. Hall, dealing with recent surgery and her husband’s absence, expressed her anxiety over the series of unfortunate events.
Shane Tipton, in Unionville, Missouri, narrowly escaped a tornado with his 87-year-old father. They witnessed their mobile home obliterated, scattering debris across miles. Tragically, one of their hunting dogs went missing during the tornado.
Animal Shelter Damage
In Springfield, Illinois, residents suspected a tornado touched down, damaging two buildings at the Animal Protective League shelter. Fortunately, none of the nearly 150 cats and 28 dogs suffered injuries. The community provided temporary homes for the animals.
Weather System and Future Weather
Meteorologist Frank Pereira explained that the system responsible for the storms resulted from the clash between Canadian cool air and warm, humid Southern air.
The East Coast anticipated record-breaking high temperatures, with the heat expected to feel like 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Philadelphia declared a heat health emergency, activating cooling centers and field team visits, while New York City advised residents to remain hydrated and find cool shelter.
Air Travel and Power Disruptions
Weather-induced ground stops were reported at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway Airports, and New York’s JFK Airport. Pittsburgh International Airport endured a temporary power loss due to a significant power surge. Over 1,000 flights at Chicago were affected by delays or cancellations.
Commonwealth Edison Company, serving northern Illinois, reported widespread damage to poles and wires. They anticipated substantial power restoration by late Saturday.
Associated Press reporters Hannah Fingerhut in Des Moines, Iowa, and Gene Johnson in Seattle contributed to this report.
