South Korea’s Former President Yoon Sentenced for Drone Provocation

South Korea’s ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol faced a 30-year prison sentence after being found guilty of instigating tensions with North Korea through drone flights. Yoon, along with his former defense minister Kim Yong Hyun, was accused of ordering these flights over Pyongyang to escalate conflict and justify a martial law declaration at home.

The Seoul Central District Court concluded that Yoon and Kim attempted to incite North Korea into launching military actions against South Korea. This action compromised South Korea’s military interests, revealing its capabilities and inciting North Korea to bolster its defense.

Previously, Yoon received a life sentence for his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024. North Korea charged South Korea with deploying drones to distribute propaganda in Pyongyang three times in October 2024. Initially, Kim denied the accusations vaguely, while the Defense Ministry neither confirmed nor denied them.

Tensions heightened between the two Koreas, although no direct military conflicts ensued. Yoon’s defense argued that the drone activities were a countermeasure to North Korea’s earlier provocation involving balloons carrying trash into South Korea. They suggested that a guilty verdict could harm South Korea’s security, though they did not immediately indicate plans for an appeal.

Special prosecutor Cho Eun-suk led the investigation, seeking a 30-year prison sentence for Yoon, accusing him of orchestrating a warlike environment to seize power and eliminate political opposition. A 25-year sentence was sought for Kim Yong Hyun, who supported Yoon’s martial law plans.

Yoon executed martial law on December 3, 2024, through a televised announcement accusing liberal lawmakers of siding with North Korea. Martial law ended after six hours when lawmakers accessed the National Assembly and voted against it. Yoon was soon suspended from office, impeached, and eventually removed. Following his arrest in July 2025, more criminal trials continue. Both Yoon and prosecutors have appealed the verdict for the rebellion charge, where prosecutors initially sought the death penalty.
