Annual Grapes on the Green Event Offers Wine Tasting in Northbrook

The annual Grapes on the Green event in downtown Northbrook returns for its fourth year, offering a summer tradition that local residents cherish. Sponsored by the Village of Northbrook and the Northbrook Park District, the event is set for June 20 at Village Green Park. It caters exclusively to adults, providing a relaxed atmosphere from 4 to 8 p.m.

Attendees will enjoy an evening of wine tastings, games, light bites, and live music by Peter Warren, a guitarist and vocalist performing jazz, bossa nova, instrumentals, and contemporary pieces. Mike Goodman, President of the Northbrook Park District Board, emphasizes the community’s positive response to this adults-only event, stating, “Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply enjoy spending time in Village Green Park, Grapes on the Green provides a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for all.”

As Northbrook celebrates its 125th anniversary, Village President Kathryn Ciesla highlights the event as an example of what makes the community special. She describes Grapes on the Green as an occasion that “brings people together in the heart of our community,” showcasing the vibrant spirit of the Village during the favorable summer season.

Hundreds have attended previous years at the downtown park located at Shermer and Meadow Roads. Tasting tickets are priced at $49, allowing participants to sample 12 one-ounce servings from family-owned retailer Chicago Wine. Entry includes a signature wine glass with the 125th anniversary logo, and a tote bag with snacks like chocolate, crackers, dried fruit, and nuts.

Mike Widmaier, co-owner of Chicago Wine, has over 25 years of experience and discusses the diversity of wines offered, stating, “I try and touch a little bit of everything in terms of style and wines from around the world.” This year features nine wine varieties, from Spain’s 2021 Torres ‘Gran Coronas’ Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva to France’s 2025 La Croix Rose, including California’s Mirabelle Brut Rose and Italy’s Elena Walch Pinot Grigio.

Widmaier points out the value attendees receive, noting the mid-tier price point of wines offered is above typical grocery store options, delighting customers with unexpected value. Non-tasting tickets are available for $30, including signature items for those not interested in wine.

The event strictly allows adults over the age of 21, with no entry for infants, children, pets, or outside beverages. Seating at the park will be limited, encouraging attendees to bring chairs or blankets for comfort.
