Seattle’s Rise as a Premier Soccer City

Seattle has become a prominent soccer hub in the United States, known for its successful professional teams and dedicated fan base. Lumen Field, renamed Seattle Stadium, hosts teams such as the Seattle Sounders FC and the Seattle Reign FC, marking it as a key venue for U.S. soccer events.

For soccer enthusiasts in Seattle, the bitter memories of 1994 are being left behind. Despite being a passionate soccer city, Seattle missed out on hosting World Cup games in 1994. This was due to uncertainty surrounding potential venues, such as the Kingdome or the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium, and concerns about their facilities.

This year, Seattle secured its spot as a game site with Lumen Field, which was thoughtfully designed for soccer even though it serves as the NFL Seahawks’ home. The Seattle Sounders FC, a significant presence in Major League Soccer, regularly draws over 30,000 fans per game. Meanwhile, the Seattle Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League have cemented the city as a major market for women’s soccer.

Seattle has attracted top American soccer talent in recent years. Clint Dempsey finished his career with the Sounders, while Megan Rapinoe played her entire NWSL career with the Reign.

This is just a great soccer city,

said Lenny Peters, who attended a pre-match rally wearing Mariners gear. He recalled being in high school during the 1994 World Cup disappointment but noted the city’s current success in securing matches.

Beyond soccer, Seattle is experiencing success in other sports. The Seahawks won the Super Bowl recently, and the Mariners came close to entering their first World Series. Seattle’s new NHL team, the Kraken, has gained popularity. Additionally, the NBA is considering reviving the Seattle SuperSonics, which moved away in 2008, leaving another void in Seattle’s sports history.
