Serena Williams has created a buzz in the tennis world by announcing her return to Wimbledon with a wildcard entry. The 44-year-old athlete will fill the final women’s singles spot at the tournament, an opportunity that arose after a gap was identified earlier in the week.
Williams has also secured a wildcard to participate with her sister, Venus Williams, in doubles competition. Serena had hinted at possibly returning to singles play, and now, she’s making it official.
‘You think I’m ready for singles? I need to get to work,’ Serena remarked, as she prepared at SW19, according to Yahoo Sports.
Throughout her career, Serena has achieved seven Wimbledon singles titles, yet Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles remains a goal. Serena is close, with 23 wins in her career.
Serena’s last singles victory was at the 2019 Wimbledon, where she defeated Simona Halep of Romania. Since resuming competition, she’s played just two doubles matches after a four-year hiatus from the sport.
Williams’ career achievements are extensive. She has won all Grand Slam tournaments, including the Australian Open, French Open, and U.S. Open, at least three times each. Alongside Venus, Serena has achieved the ‘Golden Slam’ in both singles and doubles competitions.
Serena, whose fame extends far beyond the tennis arena, draws fans worldwide who are eager to see her performance at this year’s tournament.
In a 2022 appearance at Wimbledon, Serena expressed uncertainty about her future participation, ‘Who knows where I’ll pop up?’ This year, her love for playing on grass, having won 107 out of 123 matches on the surface, gives hope for a strong comeback.
The tournament kicks off on June 29, with Serena’s first-round opponent revealed this Friday.
