If you have $1,300 and can travel to Phuket, Thailand, you can spend a month training at Tiger Muay Thai & Mixed Martial Arts. After intense preparation, you have the chance to fight another student in a ring before an audience. This experience spans three rounds or ends when a participant can no longer continue.
I assured my editors of documenting the global phenomenon of Thai kickboxing and my personal journey through Tiger’s well-known demanding training. Privately, I hoped to excel unexpectedly, demonstrating a strong work ethic even at 48 years old. However, my aspirations were altered. Tiger challenged me to revisit fundamental aspects of physicality.
Previously, driven by a desire to resist physical domination from larger peers, I embraced martial arts. It began with taekwondo in the late ’80s, progressed to wrestling, competitive striking, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu until injuries forced a stop at 31. This taught me that domination manifests differently.
Later, I pursued Muay Thai for two reasons. Predominantly, I sought to deflect potential bullies and unwanted confrontations. Moreover, I wanted ongoing personal growth and to combat aging’s limitations. Confidence that others could not easily harm me enhanced my life.
Muay Thai provides this assurance through its rigorous techniques. The sport, Thailand’s national pride, mixes boxing punches with kicks, elbows, and knees. Its distinctive knee and elbow strikes, along with leg kicks using the shin, differentiate it from other kickboxing styles. This has earned Muay Thai a formidable reputation, attracting global mixed martial arts aficionados to Thailand.
Tiger Muay Thai holds historical significance as Phuket’s first Muay Thai gym on Soi Ta-iad. Recognized by visitors as Fitness Street, Soi Ta-iad resembles a condensed, bustling hub. This one-mile stretch houses numerous fight and fitness gyms, cannabis shops, Muay Thai gear stores, wellness clinics, and eateries specializing in healthy options. The streets, crowded primarily with scooters and some pickups carrying workers, are considered extremely safe by some, yet tales of scooter accidents are common.
