Ben McAdams Faces Progressive Challengers in Utah’s New Liberal District

The Democratic Party’s internal conflict is unfolding in Utah, a state traditionally leaning Republican. Though Utah hasn’t supported a Democratic presidential candidate since Lyndon B. Johnson, a court-ordered redistricting has created a Democratic-leaning congressional district in Salt Lake City. This fall, for the first time since 2018, Utah might elect a Democrat to the House of Representatives.

The primary election on Tuesday presents a choice between different visions for the Democratic Party: progressive activism versus moderate pragmatism. Ben McAdams, a former representative and moderate Democrat, is vying against several progressive candidates for this newly created liberal seat.

McAdams, who previously served as Utah’s last Democratic congressman, was known for his conservative stance relative to the rest of the Democratic Party. His main opponent, Nate Blouin, a state senator, is supported by prominent progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

McAdams benefits from significant financial backing, including support from a super PAC affiliated with the artificial intelligence sector and the New Democrat Majority, which favors centrist candidates. Despite this support, the demographics of the reconfigured district demand that he modify his positions to match the progressive electorate. Kamala Harris, former Vice President, would have won in this district by a substantial margin in 2024.

This primary is crucial for setting the direction of the Democratic Party in a state that veers from its usual political alignment, and its outcome will indicate whether moderate or progressive approaches will prevail.
