MIAMI — Oscar Alvarez, a young Cuban American, is undertaking an unusual mission in Miami. He is personally delivering the message of democratic socialism, going door-to-door in neighborhoods, yet he finds it difficult to share these discussions within his own family’s home.
On a recent day, as his mother occupied the kitchen and his brother rested after a beach outing, Alvarez quietly gathered his belongings. He packed his tote bag with several copies of his socialist zine, preparing for another day of outreach.
His task involves meeting with local residents, where conversations about democratic socialism often take place. One such meeting was held at the Silver Court mobile home park in Miami. Here, Alvarez and the residents gather weekly to discuss various community issues and the potential benefits of his political ideas.
Alvarez’s efforts highlight a unique juxtaposition. While he passionately promotes his beliefs to strangers, discussing these same ideas with his family remains a challenge. Despite this, his commitment to spreading his message remains unwavering.
“Bringing socialism to Miami is not an easy task, especially given its complex political landscape,” Alvarez notes.
