Crews in Venezuela rescued 33 people from collapsed structures over the weekend. The authorities warn that nearly 50,000 are still feared missing. As of late Saturday, the Associated Press reported 1,430 fatalities. More than 3,000 are injured, and many are in shelters.
La Guaira state experienced severe devastation, with entire apartment blocks and public housing collapsing after the consecutive quakes. Ongoing aftershocks hinder rescue efforts and force survivors to remain outdoors.
Among the rescued are an infant, found by U.S. rescuers, and two separate 11-year-old boys, found by Colombian and Mexican teams. U.S. firefighters from Virginia, dispatched by the State Department, participated in rescue operations.
Acting President Delcy RodrÃguez expressed hope for each rescued life. Swiss rescue team leader Sebastian Eugster indicated that the likelihood of finding survivors decreases significantly after 72 hours.
The number of missing remains uncertain, with estimates fluctuating. Families reported 68,900 missing individuals, highlighting the chaotic situation.
The Trump Administration committed $150 million in aid and deployed Navy warships to assist. Amid the crisis, Starlink provides communication services, allowing mobile connectivity despite terrestrial network failures.
“Starlink Mobile is offering free connectivity,” the company reported, aiding communication for affected customers.
Pope Leo offered support to survivors and victims’ families, expressing solidarity during Sunday’s prayer in Rome.
