Fans are thrilled to see Serena Williams back on the tennis court. Remarkably, Williams herself shared in this excitement. During her initial Wimbledon press conference, she expressed surprise at her return. ‘When I evolved, I never thought I’d come back,’ she noted.
The legendary tennis player, boasting 23 Grand Slam singles titles, played her first professional match since the 2022 US Open earlier this month. Teaming up with Victoria Mboko, she competed in doubles at the HSBC Championships on June 9. The following week, she paired with Karolina Muchova for doubles at the Berlin Tennis Open. Now, at 44, Williams aims to return to singles competition as a wild card entrant at Wimbledon next week.
‘I had until Monday to decide,’ she mentioned. ‘I think it was, like, Sunday because I just wasn’t sure up until then. Honestly, I’m still not even sure, but we’ll see.’
Williams admitted to feeling nervous, citing this emotion as evidence of her passion and dedication to tennis. Whether in the first round or the finals, she consistently experienced nerves but managed to shake them off and proceed.
She revealed the internal conflict she faced when considering the wild card offer, even asking herself, ‘What’s wrong with me, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you nuts?’ Ultimately, she accepted, recognizing the opportunity might not come again.
Williams has an impressive record at Wimbledon, capturing seven singles titles with the latest in 2016. She is set to compete against Australia’s Maya Joint, 20, on Tuesday, June 30. Additionally, she will join forces with her sister, Venus Williams, 46, in the doubles competition. The sisters have together claimed 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, with six victories at Wimbledon.
