Looking back, Ujiri’s 2018 trade remains bold. He parted ways with beloved Raptors star DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a future first-round draft pick—later used on Keldon Johnson—for Leonard and Danny Green. Leonard’s contract was expiring, and his departure seemed likely. However, that season proved advantageous as Toronto claimed its first NBA championship, beating Golden State. Leonard averaged impressive stats, including 30.5 points per game during the playoffs, securing Finals MVP.

Ujiri’s interest in Leonard seems clear. Adding Leonard to Dallas alongside a healthy Irving could provide a robust roster with supporting talent like Max Christie, Naji Marshall, Dereck Lively, Daniel Gafford, and rookie Morez Johnson. Leonard’s willingness to consider long-term extensions only with Toronto and San Antonio, if not the Clippers, would mean another one-year contract for Ujiri.
