Kawhi Leonard Trade Rumors Heat Up with Multiple Teams in the Mix

The trade saga of Kawhi Leonard has intensified. As Leonard enters the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, there’s speculation surrounding his future. If the Clippers can’t secure an extension, many believe Leonard will be moved. Recent links have emerged with the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, and San Antonio Spurs expressing interest.

On Sunday, the narrative took a dramatic turn. Reports surfaced indicating the Clippers had engaged in “real trade conversations” with the Toronto Raptors. Leonard led Toronto to an NBA title in 2019, and he’s previously expressed openness to an extension with them, suggesting a return could be possible.

Masai Ujiri, who orchestrated the original Leonard trade in 2018, now serves as the president of basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks. Ujiri is reportedly keen on bringing Leonard to Dallas, potentially forming a trio with Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving. Sources from The Athletic reveal discussions between Dallas and Los Angeles about a trade package including P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, and draft picks.

Looking back, Ujiri’s 2018 trade remains bold. He parted ways with beloved Raptors star DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a future first-round draft pick—later used on Keldon Johnson—for Leonard and Danny Green. Leonard’s contract was expiring, and his departure seemed likely. However, that season proved advantageous as Toronto claimed its first NBA championship, beating Golden State. Leonard averaged impressive stats, including 30.5 points per game during the playoffs, securing Finals MVP.

Ujiri’s interest in Leonard seems clear. Adding Leonard to Dallas alongside a healthy Irving could provide a robust roster with supporting talent like Max Christie, Naji Marshall, Dereck Lively, Daniel Gafford, and rookie Morez Johnson. Leonard’s willingness to consider long-term extensions only with Toronto and San Antonio, if not the Clippers, would mean another one-year contract for Ujiri. Yet, historical success with such a move offers hope for another promising season.
